Why we price New Brunswick offers with their monthly fee

Clearview Energy ClearGuarantee12Plus lists 22.7¢ per kWh and adds $9.99 a month. That makes it 24.7¢ in a 500 kWh month and 23.7¢ at 1,000 kWh. Its rate is already at or above PSEG’s 19.6¢ BGS rate, so with the fee it costs more at any usage.

PSEG’s BGS rate in New Brunswick

The BGS rate is what PSEG charges for the electricity itself if you never choose a supplier: its Basic Generation Service (BGS). For New Brunswick homes it is 19.6¢ per kWh since October 1, 2026. It covers supply only; PSEG’s delivery charges are billed on top whichever supplier you use.

PSEG resets it on a schedule set with the NJ BPU, from the power bought at New Jersey’s annual BGS auction, overseen by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJ BPU). A supplier’s fixed price stays the same for its whole term, so it can end up above or below the BGS rate as the default moves.

The rule for switching: an offer saves money only when its price, monthly fee included, is below the BGS rate at your usage. The NJ BPU lists licensed third-party suppliers on its NJ Energy Choice site.

Questions

New Brunswick electricity questions

How do I compare electricity rates in New Brunswick, New Jersey?

Enter your ZIP code to see the offers NJ BPU-licensed suppliers have for New Brunswick homes on PSEG’s wires. New Jersey opened electricity supply to competition under the Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act of 1999, overseen by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJ BPU). PSEG still delivers the power, but you can buy the electricity itself from a supplier. Compare each offer, monthly fee included, with PSEG’s BGS rate (19.6¢ per kWh since October 1, 2026), and check the term and cancellation terms before you enroll.

What’s the cheapest electricity plan in New Brunswick?

At 1,000 kWh a month, the cheapest fixed 12-month plan for PSEG customers in New Brunswick is Major Energy Secure Choice 12 at 19.8¢ per kWh, monthly fees included, against PSEG’s BGS rate of 19.6¢. No offer is below the BGS rate at that usage today.

How is New Brunswick electricity different from a flat statewide rate?

New Jersey has no single statewide rate. New Brunswick is in PSEG’s service area, one of four New Jersey utilities (PSEG, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric and Rockland Electric), and each sets its own delivery charges and has its own BGS rate. Suppliers price their offers by utility too, so homes in different utility areas can pay different prices on the same supplier plan. Delivery stays with PSEG whichever supplier you choose.

What is PSEG’s BGS rate?

It is 19.6¢ per kWh for homes since October 1, 2026: what PSEG charges for the electricity itself if you don’t choose a supplier, its Basic Generation Service (BGS). It covers supply only. A supplier saves you money only when its price, monthly fee included, is below it at your usage.

Can I choose my electricity supplier in New Brunswick?

Yes. 5 NJ BPU-licensed suppliers have 11 fixed-rate offers for PSEG customers today. In 2025, 94,117 PSEG homes, 5% of the homes on its wires, bought their electricity from a third-party supplier or a government energy aggregation program instead of PSEG (U.S. Energy Information Administration).

How do I switch electricity suppliers in New Brunswick?

Enter your ZIP code, compare the offers with the BGS rate, and enroll online with Smart Enroll. You need your PSEG account number. PSEG handles the switch, keeps delivering your power and reads your meter; there is no interruption in service. If you are already in a supplier contract, check its cancellation fee first.

What happens if I don’t choose a supplier in New Brunswick?

You stay on PSEG’s Basic Generation Service (BGS) and pay its BGS rate, 19.6¢ per kWh today. You can choose a supplier at any time.

Are there renewable electricity plans in New Brunswick?

Yes. The lowest 100% renewable offer for PSEG customers today is Major Energy Secure Green Choice 12 at 20.0¢ per kWh at 1,000 kWh.

What does PSEG do if I switch?

PSEG owns the poles, wires and meters in New Brunswick, restores outages and reads your meter whichever supplier you choose. Its delivery charges are set by the NJ BPU and are the same on every offer. Your supplier only changes the price of the electricity itself.

Who regulates electricity in New Brunswick?

The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (NJ BPU) sets PSEG’s delivery rates, licenses every third-party supplier and oversees the annual auction that sets Basic Generation Service prices. New Jersey’s electricity choice program dates to the Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act of 1999.
