Questions

Bill Grade, answered

How is the grade calculated?

We divide your bill by your usage to get the price you pay per kWh, then find the cheapest plan sold in your ZIP today at that same usage. The grade is how far above that plan you are: A is within 5%, B is 5 to 15% above, C is 15 to 30%, D is 30 to 50%, and F is more than 50% above.

Which states does Bill Grade work in?

Texas, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Washington DC, the markets where you choose who supplies your electricity. If a city-owned utility or a co-op serves your ZIP, such as Austin Energy or CPS Energy in Texas, there is no plan to switch to and the tool says so. In any other state, enter your ZIP and we link you to that state's rates and utilities.

Where do the plan prices come from?

Texas plans come from Compare Power's live plan database, which lists the plans retail providers sell in each ZIP and is refreshed daily. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and DC prices come from PowerKiosk supplier offers, compared with the utility's price to compare, also refreshed daily.

How is it different in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and DC?

In Texas one retail plan covers both delivery and energy, so we compare your whole bill with each plan's total price at your usage. In Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Jersey and DC your bill has two parts: delivery from the utility, which you cannot shop, and supply, which you can. We keep your delivery charges as they are, swap in the cheapest supplier offer or the utility's price to compare, and grade the total. That is why only the supply part of your bill changes when you switch there.

Should I switch if my grade is C or worse?

Usually, but check your current plan for an early termination fee first. Texas plans list it on the Electricity Facts Label; suppliers in the other markets list it in the contract summary. Divide the fee by the monthly saving shown to see how many months it takes to pay back. If your plan has ended and you are on a month-to-month price, there is normally no fee to leave.

Is it free, and do you keep my numbers?

It is free and needs no signup or email. We use your ZIP, bill and usage to calculate the grade and do not store them. The result link contains those three numbers, so anyone you send it to can see them.
