Discount Power launched in Houston in 2008, founded by veterans of the Texas energy industry. The name says it all—their mission is to offer some of the most affordable electricity rates in Texas. In 2018, NRG Energy acquired them, giving them the financial backing of a Fortune 500 company that also owns Reliant and Green Mountain Energy. The company's rapid growth earned them the #52 spot on the Inc. 5000 list of America's Fastest Growing Companies in 2017. In February 2024, they acquired Energy Texas, expanding their customer base further. Discount Power focuses exclusively on fixed-rate plans. You won't find Free Nights, prepaid, or month-to-month options here. What you will find are some of the lowest fixed rates available in the Texas market—often 15-25% below major providers like TXU and Reliant.
Discount Power keeps things simple with fixed-rate plans only: Fixed Rate Plans (12-24 months): Lock in your rate for 1-2 years. Many plans include bill credits at the 1000 kWh usage threshold. 100% Renewable Options: Green energy plans available at competitive prices—only slightly more than standard plans. No Prepaid/Variable: Unlike some competitors, Discount Power doesn't offer pay-as-you-go or month-to-month options. It's all fixed-rate contracts. The simplicity is intentional—fewer plan types mean lower overhead and lower prices for customers.
Discount Power consistently offers some of Texas's lowest rates: typically 9¢ to 12¢ per kWh. That's often 15-25% below TXU and Reliant. Bill credit math matters: Many Discount Power plans show very low rates (like 8.7¢/kWh at 1000 kWh) because they include bill credits. But if you use less than 1000 kWh, you won't qualify for the credit, and your effective rate could jump to 20¢+ per kWh. Always calculate at your usage level: Before signing up, estimate your monthly usage and calculate the actual cost. The EFL (Electricity Facts Label) shows rates at 500, 1000, and 2000 kWh—find the one closest to your usage. 24-month ETF warning: While 12-month plans have a standard $150 ETF, 24-month plans carry a steep $295 early termination fee. Make sure you're committed before locking in.
"Switched from TXU and saved about $40/month on same usage. Simple plan, predictable bills. Happy customer for 2 years now."

"Found them through a rate comparison site. Lowest rate I could find for my ZIP code. The app shows daily usage which is helpful."

"The bill credit plan trapped me. Advertised rate was 8.7¢ but I only use 700 kWh and ended up paying over 20¢/kWh effective rate."

"Wanted to switch after 6 months but the $295 ETF on my 24-month plan was too steep. Read the contract carefully."

Discount Power charges $150 for canceling 12-month contracts early and $295 for 24-month contracts. This is higher than some competitors, so make sure you can commit to the full contract term before signing up.

Many Discount Power plans include bill credits (often $125) when you use 1000 kWh or more in a billing cycle. This makes the effective rate very low for mid-high usage households. But if you use less than 1000 kWh, you won't receive the credit, and your effective rate will be much higher than advertised.
