The demand charge problem for congregations

Most commercial utility tariffs include a demand charge — a fee based on your highest 15- or 30-minute interval of consumption during the billing period. For a house of worship, that peak almost always happens at the same moment every week: when the HVAC system races to bring a large, high-ceiling sanctuary from overnight setback to comfortable temperature before the first service.

  • Pre-condition gradually, don't cold-start

  • Zone the HVAC properly

    Office and classroom zones should condition independently of the sanctuary. Running the full system to serve a few staff members on Tuesday burns money and raises your baseline unnecessarily.

  • Set aggressive setback schedules

    Program the thermostat to wide setbacks on empty days. A sanctuary doesn't need to stay at 70°F on a Wednesday when no one will be there until Saturday evening at the earliest.

Why is our church's electric bill so high when we only use the building one day a week?

Should we lock in a fixed rate or stay on a variable rate?

Fixed supply rates suit most congregations well. Church budgets are typically set annually by a board or council, and budget predictability matters more than the theoretical upside of a variable rate. A fixed-rate supply contract lets you know exactly what you'll pay per kilowatt-hour for the contract term, which makes budget planning straightforward. Variable rates can drop when wholesale energy prices fall, but they also spike — sometimes significantly — during extreme weather. When is the right time for a congregation to shop its electricity supply?
