Pennsylvania utilities and suppliers, explained

How do I pick the cheapest electricity supplier in Pennsylvania?

Start with your utility — PECO, Duquesne Light, PPL Electric, Met-Ed, Penelec, Penn Power, West Penn Power, or UGI — because that fixes your delivery charge and your price-to-compare (PTC), the default supply rate set quarterly by the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PA PUC). Then check Electric Generation Suppliers (EGS) licensed by the PA PUC on papowerswitch.com, filtered to suppliers serving your utility. Compare each EGS supply rate against your PTC. If the EGS rate is lower for the full contract term, check the cancellation fee, the renewal terms, and whether the rate is fixed or variable. The PA PUC publishes the PTC each quarter — that's your benchmark for "am I saving."

What's the difference between my utility and a competitive supplier?

In Pennsylvania, the utility — an Electric Distribution Company (EDC) — owns the poles, wires, and meter and physically delivers electricity to your home. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PA PUC) sets EDC delivery charges and approves the default supply price, the price-to-compare (PTC). The competitive supplier is an Electric Generation Supplier (EGS) — a PA PUC-licensed company you choose that sets your supply rate. You still get one bill from your EDC, but the supply portion of the line item goes to the EGS if you've shopped. The EDC always handles outages, restoration, and meter reads. You can drop an EGS and return to PTC at any time; you can't switch EDCs.

Are these rates real-time?

The EGS supplier rates on this page refresh daily from PowerKiosk's direct supplier feeds — what you see was published within the last twenty-four hours. The price-to-compare (PTC) for each utility refreshes when the PA PUC publishes its quarterly default service rate change, typically March, June, September, and December. EDC delivery charges shown reflect the most recent PA PUC-approved tariff. Rates can change between your search and the moment you enroll, especially around quarter boundaries. Always confirm the supplier's contract terms on the EGS enrollment page before signing — that's the binding rate.
